Brian Thomas Prize for Originality in Journalism 2025

I'm deeply honoured to have been awarded the inaugural Brian Thomas Prize for Originality in Journalism. 

My heartfelt thanks go to Brian’s family, friends and colleagues for sharing his memory with me. With their kind permission, I have shared a few words about his journalistic ethos below, courtesy of his former colleague Wendy Coulton.

“Brian Thomas was the very definition of originality as a newspaper journalist, poet, published author, artist and musician.

Brian had no agenda or mission to be a non-conformist - he simply was authentic in terms of his own moral compass, interpretation of the world around him and genuine curiosity and connection with people.

Observer, truth seeker and storyteller, Brian mentored apprentice journalists, including myself. Yes, there were the essential cornerstones to writing - such as accuracy, impartiality and flow - but not at the expense of a journalist finding their own voice, tone and style.

What we create should mirror and be aligned to who we are and what we believe - and in doing so without compromising integrity or honesty.

Standing out from the crowd or leaving an indelible impression on others doesn’t have to be the outcome of controversy, antagonism or being the loudest voice. 

Brian didn't “follow” anyone - he set the course of his own life without fear or seeking favour. He was the real deal.

This award has been created to honour Brian’s authenticity, integrity and creative brilliance.” 

I am incredibly humbled to have received this award and hope that I can continue to celebrate Brian’s legacy through my work.
